I wouldn't be putting acid or alkali near it. The other day i accidently put an alloy meat mallot in the dishwasher and it came out covered with a black oxide residue. Just wash it out with soapy water. I doubt you will get every last bit out, but the pre filter on the pump will stop it getting in the fuel system.

I used plain water for mine. There was only stainless steel swarf in it and since it was clean it didn't stick to the tank. I heated it with a heat gun to dry it out.
