I have the same blanket in mine as what Gav does (thanks Gav), and after a couple of minutes sitting, my side pipes are warm to touch (not burning hot) however, the turn out pipes coming through body work, remain hot for some time.
My fear (same as you Sambo) was a kiddie seeing the car and deciding the side pipes make a good step ladder to get a better look inside the cabin (have caught kids doing this at car shows).

With your mounting Sambo, since you are not running them live, you probably don't really need them rubber mounted, I would have though something in engine bay holding the flange, and a mount about 3/4 way back would be enough.
