Here in NZ they won't even look at you for classic racing if you go bigger than 1" diameter over original 15" wheels. When I see a Cobra or an older classic style vehicle with 18" and larger wheels, they just don't look right, and not what these cars are about. In fact cobra's with over 18" diameter wheels and larger just draw attention to the owner as a dickhead.
The rationale behind the 17" is the brakes... the 15" do not allow strong disk brakes - hence the compromise with halibrand style 17".

I have seen / and droved - old cars where the brakes got too hot = no stopping power at all

I live with the 17", but love the 15" - billboard or no billboard
