Yes, the 101 route is much longer; we break for lunch in Santa Barbara area or there abouts. Eventually you have to choose between the 410 or 1 through several cities and that's what kills a lot of the time, regardless. This year, we're contemplating I-5 but somewhere along the way near Bakersfield, cut over to 101 through the mountains and then take 1. This might make up for the longer but more scenic 101.
Another idea was to leave Thur. evening and get 1/2 way down and stay overnight in some hotel in Bakersfield (I hear one is next to a police station), then Fri. morning, we can take all the time we want to get to HB. This way it's not a huge rush all in one day. I can go either way on that.
Personally, I have to talk to Melinda and schedule dropping off the kid to High School Friday morning. That's the only reason I may not drive Thur. night.
