I think you maybe confusing the diameter of the wheel/tire with width and offset/backspacing. A 17" wheel with lower aspect ratio tire can be the same diameter as the 15" wheel. If its sticking out the side, then its either wider, or you have the offset/backspacing off for what would be optimal. A skilled wheel shop can measure your exact configuration and suggest a wheel that would work well. and/or hopefully someone will chime in with a similar model.
