Great availability (NOS blocks still fairly common), relatively cheap, makes good power, and visually (at least from the top of the engine bay) nearly identical to the 427.

Having said that, so are 428's. IMHO, unless you have access to a sound 390 at a bargain price, why not just go with a 428? They were, after all, fitted to some of the originals.
