I visit a company called Sumitomo crankshaft. They manufacture the cranks for the V-10 Viper, most high performance LS cranks, and cranks for the
oil industry. You should see them machining a crank for a mud pump used in the
oil fields. The raw stock is 4330 and is 18" in diameter and 6-8 feet long. The material coming off that is amazing. They use a machine called a GFM and depending on size, they can have a 35" disk mill that cuts the throws all in one shot. It is amazing watching the metal being removed. I also visit Callies and Norton Crank. Lots of crank manufacturing in Ohio.
