This is going to get harder under the new "one sticker" program. Because the inspection place no longer issues the sticker, they do the inspection and enter it in a database, that the county tax office then refers to when issuing the registration sticker.

Just did this on my VW Passat TDI. As a diesel, it only needs the safety inspection, no emissions. This is well understood by the inspection places and I never had any issues getting a sticker before. When I went for my registration sticker this time, the clerk looked it up, and then very accusingly said "why did you not get an emissions test?" I reminded her about the diesel thing and she had to look it up before she agreed and issued me the registration sticker.

So I foresee issues of this sort, going forward, if the inspection does not conform with the registration information...
