I set up an online account with the MVC and started entering the personalized plates I considered. Among others, I tried to get 65COBRA, but it was unavailable. But then I tried 65C0BRA with a zero in place of the letter O. Lo and behold 65C0BRA was available. However, there was a disclaimer that said, in essence, all submissions are subject to final approval. So I paid the fee, submitted the plate request and waited with baited breath for the reply.
This is the email I received from the MVC:
Thank you for your interest in New Jersey's personalized plates. Unfortunately your request must be denied at this time due to the reason(s) stated below.
Requested Plate Number: 65C0BRA
Reason for Denial: Can't substitute zero for the letter "O" or vise versa.
WTH?!?!?!?
I guess I am sticking with the state issued plates.

Sorry, if they allowed it, your car could be confused with another, should that other car be used in a crime, then you could be in for a world of trouble. Hence the no duplicate rules. NJ is not the only state. Figure out something else, like SPF CBRA, or SPF MKIII, of FPSB.
