Well, as I understand it, the crank position sensor gives a nuch more accurate and reliable reading of the RPMs, and makes accurate Top Dead Center reading much easier (for timing of spark delivery)
As to the shift light, when you are lighting the monster up, there will be NO NO NO NO time or ability to look at the TACH !!
If you do look down at the tach, it's likely disaster time...you have to look where you are going, street or strip or track, or it's *sayonara*
The light gives you a nice peripheral notification that it's time to *switch* gears.
