Default A Racing Icon Passes

I just saw a report that Rob Walker died. Walker was a long-time racing team owner who provided rides for Stirling Moss, Innes Ireland, Jo Siffert, and others. His cars were always navy blue with a white band across the nose, a tribute to his Scottish heritage. I grew up reading his Formula One race accounts in the pages of Road & Track, in the days when F1 TV coverage consisted of edited "Wide World of Sports" programs once or twice a season. His insight into the series was vast and his evaluation of the drivers painfully honest.

When Cal Metal, Big Bob and I were scheduled to go to Goodwood this past September, I hoped to have the chance to have a few words with him. Unfortunately we never made it there due to the events of September 11. By all accounts he was a classy guy who was passionate about cars and motorsports. His family, the Walker family as in Johnny Walker Black Label, etc., provided him with the means to have a long relationship with automobiles. His multi-part series titled "Rob's Cars" in R & T detailed the many vehicles that had passed through his garage, and made for great reading...

Rest in peace, RW--

Bob
