I just watched a bit of that video.
I think Jay is just reflecting his dislike of poorly produced replicas - and at the same time - confessing that he quite likes the look of a good replica and appreciates some upgrades from later models.
Also, Jay goes around the car and points out all the inconsistencies while the builder presses on with the 'originality' pitch (which seems to be mightily important to those wishing to distance themselves from 'kit' cars)
The builder is remarkably unaware that he is a walking contradiction [espousing exactness of copy in one breath then talking about updated parts from the mid 80's and using fibreglass *gasp* in the next].
Jay is just being positive about what is in front of him and the guys efforts (from what I saw).
Personally I think It is sad that the SS builder thinks talking down 'other' -vaguely defined & allegedly less worthy- kit cars somehow reflects well on his own replica.
I don't think that creating a fibreglass replica that costs $170k (according to autoblog) is such a great feat, F5 selling a complete kit for $20k is a greater achievement.
