The photo of that very impressive engine setup reminds me of the story of the invention of the jet engine. While working on a turbocharged aircraft engine, an engineer observing the array of exhaust turbines spinning the array of intake fans apparently had the thought, "Why do we need that internal combustion engine in the middle?" He then designed an engine consisting of nothing but turbine fans driving compressor fans with a place in the middle for the fuel and air to be mixed and burned - the first jet engine. . . . I'd say this engine is about 50/50 internal combustion and jet turbine. I'll bet it sure sounds cool.
