It really is a rip-off. I got a coupon from a Nissan dealership a few months ago for a "free" safety inspection - just pay for the emissions inspection (both are required annually). The service adviser said I needed new rear brake pads. I declined since I do that myself. Went to the store and bought new pads and when I removed the first wheel, saw that I still had at least 75% left. The fronts were new, but I checked them anyway - good all around. Now I know why the adviser was trying to talk me into it saying I'd ruin the disks in short order - he knew I'd find out it was BS that I even needed pads. I'm sure there are endless similar stories out there...
