I like the gas strut. I started of with the catch type, until someone came along and tried to shut the boot without releasing the catch. Almost cracked the lid. I've now fitted it to the bonnet and I hate having to go around the other side to release the catch or fiddling with the catch having to lift the bonnet press the catch then drop it. I have heard that someone who re-gasses these lifts can adjust it to any pressure you need. So I'll be looking to replace it soon. The boot is so light you only need a very weak strut to hold it up so when it's closed there isn't much force on the brackets. I've made up a slightly longer bracket on the lid itself to spread the load.
