My car has 17" wheels and good year eagle F1's that were put on in 2010. I need to replace the tires due to age but they have a ton of tread on them.....overall the tires handle great but the 17" tires let you feel every bump in the road. I drove a car with 15" wheels and Avons and it was MUCH smoother. My car feels more planted with the 17" wheels but I wouldn't be opposed to going with the Avons and 15" wheels. I would think you could get good miles out of them depending on how hard you drove it and what type of climate you are in. I sure wish there was a magical way to make the 17"s ride like those 15"s!
