There was a thread not long ago about something similar. I had same happen a few years ago and once I checked the big wire connections at back of amp gauge, I found them to be really damaged from heat and the insulation on the wires was melted, connections were failing as well. I have always worried about the fact that they run all the amperage up to a little gauge in my dash.
