I just recently did this on a stock water pump. I removed the pump, got a piece of dowel that fit snugly and put in the tube. I then took a propane torch and heated the pump (not a lot) then I used vice grips and worked the tube until I could twist it out. Then I slathered a glob of grease on 1/2" pipe tap. I tapped the pump and pretty much all of the chips were held in the grease. I then cleaned up opening, took an air hose and blew it out. I wiped on liquid Permatex on plug threads and sealed it up.
