I had a bad ignition switch once. As long as it was "Ignition ON", the ignition was on. And if you held in the "START" position the starter it would crank and start. There was an open in the ignition circuit between "Ignition ON" and "START". When and if you released the starter position to spring back to "Ignition ON", it would die. You had to force it back to "Ignition ON" to keep the engine running.
