If you are not racing and are running a normally aspirated engine, a mechanical fuel pump will work perfectly for most applications and will outlast an electric fuel pump. In a racing situation the electric fuel pump offers greater ability to fine tune the fuel delivery, and longevity is not that much of an issue as you typically are only running for 20 minutes or so and only several times per year.
