If I was shipping side pipes I'd build a wooden crate, large enough to hold both side pipes - kind of like a small casket. Simple 1"x2" or 2"x2" framing, covered with thin plywood and glued and stapled together. Put the pipes in with plenty of packing (e.g. bubble wrap) to protect them and keep them separated. The lid / top panel can be screwed down w/o glue so the receiver can take the lid off, then screw it back down for return shipping.

This would obviously be heavier than cardboard or other, simpler packing, but would also protect the pipes a lot better.
