that happened to my car. I removed the steering wheel, pulled the hub, took advantage of the working space to realign and tighten the turn signal module, then put everything back together. No more slop.

I don't know what exactly was going on because I didn't have the steering column completely removed to see how it is constructed.

BTW the steering wheel center cap is held on with double sided tape, you can pry it off without causing any damage.
