On the original FIA & USRRC 289 Cobras the defuser plate fit inside the scoop and was riveted. The scoop inlet opening was deeper allowing the diffuser plate to be placed inside the scoop and not very visible from the engine compartment side such as on the Kirkham or SAI Continuation Series Cobras which are more often riveted to the vertical lip on the engine compartment side of the hood scoop (similar to the photo Jeff has in his post).
