Default Those who made new dashboards

Hey guys, I've been working on fixing various areas of my CR that annoy me, removed the dash to do a serious wiring rework and ended up changing up some switches and locations. My dash has a wood face that is attached to the original fiberglass dash piece. Is this how most were done? It's a real PITA to mount switches and such due to the thickness of the combined materials. Everything requires being bored down with a forestner bit in order to get the switches through. Looking for examples of anyone who has replaced theirs. I'm thinking of going with a metal unit since I have access to sheet metal pretty readily and making an MDF or similar frame to go behind it. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated!
