I saw and remembered this verse today as I was reading the Autoweek eulogy for Dan. It is a part of an A.E. Houseman poem that a now deceased Autoweek Journalist and lifelong friend of Dan Gurney, Denise McCluggage, used when she wrote her book about those special men from his generation, like Dan Gurney. The very same men who so astounded us with their on track and life performances and have now passed on.
With rue my heart is laden
For golden friends I had
For many a rose-lipped maiden
And many a lightfoot lad
By brooks too broad for leaping
The lightfoot boys are laid
The rose-lipped girls are sleeping
In fields where roses fade
The man still amazes me ...
