They allow you to "tune" the airflow as do the sun visors. With a little fiddling you can really control the airflow. And in the rain over 50 MPH you can basically divert most of the water over and around you....once you stop all bets are off!

This is absolutely true! The top visors and the side wings can make a dry cabin at speed (except for what flows in around the doors since the rain directed down flows behind the weather strip instead of in front. But stop and you'll get a shower. Oh, and nothing much helps with hail.
