I have heard tales of people doing such things, but it seems crazy. The landing lights I just looked at are 250 watts each. A pair of those would draw > 40 amps!

Other halogen landing lights are listed from 100 watts to 600 watts - even a pair of 100 watt lamps would be intense and draw nearly 20 amps.
These days I'd be looking for LED lamps - though they'd certainly not be period correct.
