I have wrapped and padded the roll bars in my roadsters for over 40 years. To do otherwise is just inviting blunt force trauma to your head. If you can touch your head to the steel of your unpadded roll bar you are just asking to turn a "light accident" in to a serious, and potentially fatal, one when your head smashes back in to it. Just a couple of years ago we had a thread where a guy was showing off at the country club and skidded in to the curb. Unfortunately his head smashed back in to the roll bar and that finished him off. Not a lot of damage to the car either.
