I don't use them as the load on the spanner nut and metal grinding with the spring loaded is a real detractor. (Probably not an issue, its just me).
I usually have the car on jack stands. Remove the front wheels, Use a floor jack to lift the front suspension a few inches, install Motorcycle spring compressors (Small and fit the narrow shock frame tower well) Looks like these.

Lower the floor jack and the spring is loose. If the the adjustment runs up against the spanner nut/spring seat I've used a brass punch to get the last couple turns if needed.
