It is a bit confusing.
Must be mounted in the engine compartment.
Of course we all know that's obvious.
Can't be mounted on the firewall.
But must be mounted at the same height as the gauge.
I'd give up on that idea, and go for something like this:

I've seen many stepper motor gauges, accurate as you need, and only a tiny wiring harness to hide.
