I didn't hear any grinding or anything. And yes it is a top loader so I didn't have to deal with linkage.

I was in 3rd when it went out. So I tried to shift up to 4th which didn't work. So after slowing down and trying other gears, I have 1,2 and 5th gear. 3rd and 4th don't click when you shift or anything, it's like their not even there.

Gas prices in my area are around $1.35. I paid $1.08 saving .27 per gallon thru a company that sells $200 gas cards for $160 which is a 20% savings.
