I just saw this thread was resurrected and thought I'd share what I did for my conversion. I removed the tank and had a bung welded in the area suggested by Bob. I used the original fuel line as my return and ran the new supply line on the right side of the car. Here's a photo of how I configured the pump and filter. I gave up on the in-tank option because there is very little room on the top of the tank to run fuel lines. A custom tank would be necessary with a shorter profile to use a top mounted fuel pump.

I wouldn't put a surge tank in the wheel well. Too exposed to possible damage from the rear wheel if things got ugly.
