Girdles don't do anything, unfortunately. Lots of nice photos of SBF blocks split in half with the girdle holding the main caps together.

The 302/5.0 block won't take as much horsepower before letting go, but unless you're making over 600 hp with that 408, you're in no danger of hurting it.
