I would still use the controller to operate relay so the contacts in the controller do not burn. I have four smaller pusher fans that completely cover my radiator and are divided in to two pairs, upper and lowers. Two adjustable controllers and two Bausch relays. My recent discovery was that I had tightened the circuit electrical leads breakers against plastic breaker holder. The two 20 amp and two 30 amp breakers have a heavy copper buss bar as a common supply. the plastic started to melt and the screw tension was lost and heat and it lost electrical contact completely. I epoxied in the damaged area of the circuit breaker holder and used two nuts with star washers on each breaker screw post. The nuts and washers are now tightened against the electrical connections for positive contact. The repaired plastic circuit breaker holder is just a guide fixture to hold the circuit breaker. The controllers and relays are electrically energized hot any time the master switch is on but I also have a three position ( double poll double throw toggle) switch with off in the middle to bypass the controllers to manually turn on the fans as a caution. I also have small coloered indicators lamps on the dash to indicate whether I had the fans turned on in case the engine is running and you can not hear the fans
I initially had a problem when I first bought the car. The car had the bare minimum 12V battery.
The electric master power switch was mounted on the fire wall with the on off lever access from under the dash. I could not reach it while belted in. After the car had been running, when shutting down the fans would come on and drain the battery, if Id forgotten to turn the master switch off. I forgot to turn off the master switch a lot of the time or expected to only be away a moment. I installed another master switch on the center of the dash, accessible from every where. I used a Flaming River push-in for off and twist for on master switch, in series with the other master switch. the center of the dash switch is used regularly and the under dash is an anti theft thing.
