Because they can? I suspect (1) they are built to order and (2) if the price is too high there will be no orders and the thing will fizzle or they'll lower the price.
This isn't a Shelby American or even the foundation like they did earlier. It's a licensed product. Although it does say to contact Shelby sales, so unlike what I said about the dealer network previously there does appear to be one Cobra you can buy or at least start through Shelby directly. In the end I suspect your check goes to Classic Recreations.
In some ways it's Brilliant on Shelby's part. It's sort of like lending the name to the Elenaors. It's just a simple revenue source. Sign a contract and get a chunk of change to initiate the use of the name, then get a (probably sizeable) chunk of change on every one sold. Not a bad deal for the cost of what is mostly a stock contract that would be something a first year law grad could do in a couple of hours.
