Yep, you can't trust your eyes on this one -- and a LUCAS ammeter is worse than a Smiths.
I think you will find that you've reduced your current by a good 50% to 60% going through the ammeter. An inductive ammeter tool is really wonderful to have on your work shelf -- you really ought to put that on your Christmas list.
