Mostly they stop axle tramp. Without them the lower arm flexes. It was more important at the time that when the things move they don't alter the toe in too much. So it is set with constant toe in at the rear and when under heavy braking the back lifts and stays toe in to even. If it toe's out under braking the ass will move all over and be hard to control.
