Todd,
Go back to basics,
Take spark plug 1 out and rotate engine over to top dead center on compression stroke- place a finger over the spark plug hole- compressed air should blow out as the piston rises.Now take distributor cap off and make sure rotor is pointing at #1 plug lead,if it is you are close to being timed,if not you have to lift distributor out and rotate so that the rotor is pointing to plug 1 on the cap. The other possibility is a large vacuum leak- check if the power brake hole on the rear of the carb has being plugged.
