Yes, they are necessary when you run BIG agressive roller cams. JOMAR makes really nice ones. It is a girdle, and does what the name implies, holds everything together. It ties all your rocker studs together so they don't deflect or worse yet, break. Not all the valves are opening at the exact same time under a valve cover. The rocker studs on the ones that are opening are under a great deal of stress, they want to deflect as they try and overcome the massive forces involved with your valvesprings. The neighboring studs are les stressed. The girdle tranmits the forces of any one rocker stud to all of them at the same time, strength in numbers.
