Give the ball joint a sharp "rap" with a leather mallet, dead blow hammer, or block of wood to seat it in the taper of the steering arm. Then the securing nut should turn without turning the stud.
Do not use a regular hammer/ball peen or the cage of the ball joint will be damaged.
