[A Cobra guy]

My side pipes have the S-steel gaurds that Fred mentioned. They too get hot enough to burn flesh. Like most cobra drivers I've learned to step wide, but on the pasanger side I added even more protection. I used coat hangers to fab a mockup and then had a local welder make a gaurd out of S-Steel wire. The high surface area of the wire lets it cool very quickly. The gaurd actually covers the outlet as well. It may look a little odd and certainly not "origional" but my wife no longer threatens to call the divorce lawyer when she gets out of the car.
