Spend more time on the becoming an educated consumer first, and avoid expensive mistakes. You could very well spend more time ripping out previous builders substandard components and replacing them, than if you had started from scratch with a new unassembled kit.

You could get a completed kit already on the street for the same money, although the above still applies.
