Single holley, no choke, really cold: stomp gas once, release gas pedal, turn key, then modulate throttle till it'll idle. On motors with way too much intake timing, anything other than this sometimes causes them to pop through the intake and catch the carb on fire.

Dual carbs: turn key, don't touch throttle till it starts running, no choke or pre squirt necessary.

EFI: turn key, walk away

In a fit of 16 year old genius, I looked down through the carb while cranking it to see if fuel was flowing, and it was. Flowing straight up in a vapor cloud, around my head, on fire.
