It won’t smooth over. What you have to understand is that for many, Carroll Shelby is an idol and the Cobra is a shrine. To put a Chevy, or even the incorrect Ford engine in it is, in some of their words, sacrilege, blasphemy, or heresy. It will be perceived as an attack on their belief system much in the same way Sinead O’Conner attacked catholics when she tore up a picture of the pope on SNL. The higher up on the scale of replicas you go, the more severe is your attack.
As is the case with many religious fanatics, there is only one right way and it’s their way. I don’t know if their intolerance is because you threaten them by not validating their beliefs, but I do know they will be the loudest when expressing their disapproval.
It’s a good thing CS wasn’t this type of person (an idol worshipper) or he would have built a fiberglass Ferrari replica in his garage instead of Cobras.
