Here's the story; In September of 2002 went to a car show,375 mile round trip,90% interstate driving, averaged 20.3 mpg for trip...
Last weekend, went to Pensacola for show,675 mile round trip,90% interstate driving and about the same outside air temp as Sept. show, averaged 23.5 mpg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
About a month after the Sept. drive, something broke in my stock Duraspark distributor and I replace it with an MSD vacum operated unit.....Also for this trip I put my 3"by14" K & N air filter back on. Had it off and was using a paper filter for the original look at the car show, put the paper filter in the trunk and changed out at the show. The only other change on my car was I changed the engine
oil and filter before the trip last week cause it was due anyway,Also this trip I carried a bunch more weight to boot.. Had a 13 year old boy ride along and the trunk was filled with boxes of parts to sell at the swap meet (did not sell, brought back home) as well as clothes and an ice chest in the back seat for the weekend... All in all this trip I'd say I had at least 300 pounds or more weight in the car than the first trip.....
I have noticed since changing the distibutor the motor has run "smoother" thru out the rpm range,as far as performance goes, you can not really tell by seat of the pants, but gas mileage DOES NOT lie. The only changes were the air filter and distributor,so thay must have worked ....I'll take 3.2 mpg increase any day and was very surprised to get it....Oh, forgot, paid anywhere from $1.70 to $1.98 for premium gas on the trip and at $1.98 I'll take a few mpg increase any day.......
Anyone else have any similar stories to share???????
