What makes you think you need a higher flow pump, is the fuel pressure gauge you have mounted after the pressure regulator, right next to the carb inlet showing a drop in fuel pressure below 3psi? Or are you just guessing it could use a higher flow pump? Are you sure you are hearing the pump, and not the regulator, which can be just as if not more noisy than the pump as it deals with a hydraulic hammer effect?
If the ammeter is in fact responding to the fuel pump, not say, the radiator fans switching on, the symptom you describe is not encouraging a long lifespan form your current pump. What kind of pump is on there right now?
