Most likely your dip stick isn't long enough. I have a Mildoon 8 quart road race pan and I got the Ford chromed dip stick that is the same length as the original and it comes out exactly correct. When I had my complete system cleaned out last Winter and put on new hoses and everything I think I had to use almost 9 1/2 quarts to fill the pan, hoses, filter, and
oil cooler. Try putting the dipstick down alongside the tube and see if you can get an idea of just how far it goes down.
