Ford's catalog lists the Sportsman block as 9.5" deck Height. I know of no engine mount changes. There are also several other FRPP blocks that have a 9.2" deck height. But they are not the Sportsman blocks.

Is it possible that different heads were used on the blocks that had fitment problems? There are a lot of different heads available that use different exhaust ports, Yates, Brodix 200's, TFS Street Heats to name a few.
