As the attached picture of Sam Feinstein in Cumberland in 1970 shows, the righteous thunder of the 427 Cobra racers in the region lasted well past their original owners.
I'm on the organizing committee for the second year of the National Road event, a revival of the Cumberland Airport Races and we are looking to make a connection with Ford and the Cobra community for 2004. I run the web site and we've had numerous visitors from the ford.com server in Dearborn. They've downloaded a bunch of pictures, so we know that "somebody" who wears a blue oval is tuned to the great Cobra history that pounded through Cumberland! The snakes were in the Vette's backyard at our airport, since Cumberland was a Steel Cities Region race, and the Corvette Club of Western Pennsylvania boasted Grady Davis and the Gulf
Oil gang among their members. Among the Vettes that Johnson stomped here were some very special ZO6 cars that would fetch Cobra like prices if on the market today.
This year, we're featuring Porsche and Corvette, as both marques made waves at our airport...Bruce Jennings' "King Carrera" and Don Yenko and Dick Thompson in Corvettes. But, Cobra is an obvious next step!
