The little sideways shocks were not to keep the springs in. The regular shocks and suspension setup did not drop enough for the springs to fall out.

The sideways socks, otherwise known as the "kicker" shocks were there in an attempt to stop rear axle hop under acceleration and tire spin. Basically Ford's version of traction bars. . . . The base Mustangs did not have the quadrashock rear suspension.

So in short, your problem lies elsewhere.
